coordinates: in bed in Oaxaca as per usual
[art] In honor of the Burn just about to start, I post the video from Wired with my campmate, Bruce Tomb, and his creation. Maria del Camino started life as an El Camino and then metamorphosized into being mounted on a tank tread ya know… like you do.
[music] The mother of rock and roll, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, lays down the beat guaranteed to widen your soul at least 20% or your money back.
[science] Is time speeding up or slowing down? Doesn’t it make your brain itch to ask such a question?
[art] On making art by Oliver Burkman, author of Time Management for Mortals – his advice is to writers but surely it applies to any act of faith in creation.
I think the general point here, beyond the specific question of how to get writing done, is that we desperately want to be saved. We want to find some person, or some philosophy of life, that will spare us the fear or discomfort or self-doubt or tedium that so often seems to come along for the ride, whenever we try to make progress on things we care about. We hate feeling yoked to reality in such an unpleasant way; we long instead to soar above it, in a realm free from problems. And it's the mark of a bad self-help book, a dodgy spiritual guru or an incompetent therapist that they'll be only too happy to encourage the illusion that this might one day be possible.
[sillies] I’ve been told one of my celeb doppelgangers is Helena Bonham Carter, and I couldn’t be more delighted. She plays queens and witches, which makes just about a perfect compliment in my book.
[more music] I had a crush on the teaching assistant in my Sophomore math class. He, however, had a crush on Tori Amos. Alas, neither of us got to make out with our object of desire, and I carried a scorned teenager’s jealousy of Tori ever since. This week I finally got past that enough to listen to her seminal work, Little Earthquakes. I’m glad I did since I can’t even remember his name now…
How y’all doing out there? I’m finding most of us are fried a little bit too crispy brown till we’re black on the edges. We are gathering data on how the ambient stress of the past 2.5 years is affecting us.
Much love,
Cris and Team Dragon
